Succession and Struggle
The Capetian royal dynasty in France which had produced male heirs sine 987 AD died out in 1328, provoking a succession struggle in which Edward II and Edward III were prime claimants. Edward II 's French wife Isabella and her lover, Roger Mortimer invaded England in 1326, then imprisoned and murdered Edward II. Isabella then brought her son, Edward III to the throne. In 1330, Edward III had Mortimer executed. This led to the Hundred Years War. This lasted from 1337 to 1453 (116 years).
Kings of Scotland spent years in English captivity. This started with the conflict between Henry II and Archbishop Thomas Becket. This conflict was an early manifestation o was killed instate struggle in this period. Archbishop Thomas Becket was later killed in his own cathedral church at Canterbury in 1770 by a few royal knights.
